Topic: Consider and discuss the idea of how individuals know and learn, and have shared experiences through language. What do these suggest about the human need to communicate through narrative? A Personal/Analytical Response using the text â€Å"The Word† by Pablo Neruda Born to Speak Since the age of Adam and Eve, humans have had a natural instinct to communicate and this is part of what sets us apart from other species. In the poem The Word, by Pablo Neruda, the author personifies the word by stating how it’s â€Å"born in the blood† and that it â€Å"grew in the dark body†. This leaves the reader with the impression that the word is something that is born within ourselves and it grows trapped inside of us. The author goes on to describe†¦show more content†¦By communicating these stories with one another, we ensure that our culture and language stays alive and grows into a â€Å"tree†. Neruda states that the stories of these past cultures are an â€Å"inheritance† that we are all entitled to. It is a string that ties us all and is what connects us to our past. Neruda goes on to describes how these stories can come from â€Å"dead fathers†, â€Å"wandering races† and from â€Å"lands that had returned to stone†. Regardless of the origin, the integral cause that these stories were spread was a direct result of individuals and cultures communicating them with one another. The survival of the human race can be partly credited to our compulsion to communicate through narrative with one another. We talk because we must be heard. In reference to the Bible, Adam marries Eve and not an animal because he could communicate with Eve. Communicating is a natural urge as humans have always felt the need to share their â€Å"life† with one another. In the poem Neruda boldly compares language to water by saying, â€Å"†¦the pure wine of language or inexhaustible water.† Water makes life, as we know it, possible. Therefore, Neruda is implying that language is as essential as water. He’s highlighting the importance of communication and its role in the survival of the human race.
