Slavery :: Slavery Essays
For purposes of this discussion, it is the intent of this author to assess the plight of African Americans at a time when they were merely slaves, captives taken forcibly by rich white American merchants to a new and strange land called America. Right from the very beginning, slavery was a controversial issue. It was fraught with the constant reminder of man's inhumanity to man. This was evidenced in the literature as well as movements such as the abolitionists, and one most notably John Brown, who has been portrayed as a kind of maniacal character, who would stop at nothing to see this God given mandate carried out. Similarly, books such as "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe did much to fuel the controversy that was slavery in the United States. Of course we now know that slavery as it was understood in the 19th century lasted up until the officiation of the Emancipation Proclamation, or slaves, or now newly pronounced African Americans were given their freedom, and their struggle assumes a new direction in attempting to gain equality for themselves. This is a struggle which continues today, and is not much less controversial. Nevertheless, for historical purposes, I should like to further attempt to dissect events as they existed at that time. Slavery was a practice which was much favored by the South. In the North, Americans were more industrial oriented, and had little use for slaves. They could afford to be more moralistic about the issue. However, when it came to the plight of land owners and Americans who lived in the Southern part of a very young country, that was America, they were highly preoccupied with their agrarian lifestyle. It is a fact that even George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson had slaves as did many of the forefathers of the new country. It is also true that many of these individuals had children with their Black slaves, and although it is similarly a matter of historical record that they did free their slaves, if not while th ey were alive, in their Last Will and Testament. What this means is that slavery was an issue of economics to the South, and a moral dilemma for those Americans who lived in the North. By the mid-1850's the spirit of accommodation had all but vanished. Northern interest in Emancipation pushed by abolitionists, eroded relations between families North and South.

Recognizing the Fireside Poets
Poetry characterized by its metrical form is one of the most well-liked forms of literature. It served as a creative expression of oneââ¬â¢s thoughts and emotions. There are poems that became famous and had been preserved and past down through generations. The American poetry had established its own identity from British poetry by varying the rhythms, forms, diction and tone. During the 1600 the history of American poetry formally began. During that time poems were mostly written and based on the British language standard. First there are the Puritan and Satirical poets that dominated earlier the American literature.Later they were replaced by Revolutionary Era Poets and even African American poets. When the 19th century arrived there was optimism for major achievement in poetry. During this time the Fireside poetââ¬â¢s goals and works emerged and made significant impact in the world of American poetry. The Fireside poets later were recognized as the first group of American poe ts that had successfully competed British poets in terms of popularity. Fireside Poets: Goals and Works Who were these so called ââ¬Å"Fireside poetsâ⬠and why are they called in that name?The Fireside Poets are composed of five persons namely Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878), James Russell Lowell (1819-1891), Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894) and lastly John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892). They are given this title of Fireside Poets because most of them have used the image of the hearth or the fireplace where the family gathered together to read stories and learn their poems. The goal of the Fireside Poets is to create poems that were based on traditions but can also be of equal level in terms of quality, breadth and creativity of content to that of the British poetry.Their poems are highly notable for wisdom and flexibility in lines and themes. They preferred conventional forms over experimentation in poetic styles and had often used American legends, scenes of American life and even politics as themes in their poems. The careful attention given to rhymes or the strict metrical rhythm made their works popular for memorization and recitation activities in schools and even at homes. Among the five Fireside Poets the most popular then was Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. One of his well known compositions is the Song of Hiawatha. Aside from these he was also a well known translator in several languages.He became the first American to be honored with a bust at Westminster Abbeyââ¬â¢s Poet Corner. Second to him was William Cullen Bryant who became famous for his work entitled Thanatopis, a poem that recognized death as the great equalizer of life. He worked as a lawyer and editor of New York Evening Post. Third is James Russell Lowell known for Biglow Papers, included among the American tradition of long satirical poems. Next one was Oliver Wendell Holmes a medical doctor that composed the poems Old Ironsides and The C hambered Nautilus. Lastly was John Greenleaf Whittier known for his poems Snow Bound and Legends of New England. ConclusionThe Fireside Poetââ¬â¢s greatest ambition was to be able to carve out their names, established their identity and be of equal to their British counterparts. Their poems have been a lasting legacy among the collections of American poetry. Although they are traditionalist they had been the first to made significant contributions in the area of American poetry. They have been able to use their poems to fight for a cause, portray the way of life or cultures, and share their imaginations and experiences to their readers. The Fireside Poets no longer exist but their compositions continue to live and inspire the new generation of poets.

Critical Analysis of Pharm.D in India Essay
SUMMARY Critical Analysis of Pharm.D. in India: Exploring the Way Ahead INTRODUCTION: Pharmacy education in India was mainly focused on pharmaceutical science courses rather than clinical/pharmacotherapeutic courses until 2008, when Pharm.D. was introduced and began to be offered in India, to focus towards clinical and community aspects. The study was conducted to analyse the current scenario of Pharm.D. in India and look at possible issues & options. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of the study is to find out the current status of Pharm.D. from studentsââ¬â¢ perspective and to identify the need of Pharm.D. as a part of Pharmacy Education System in India. Addressing the possible shortcomings and give probable suggestions to improve the scope of the same. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD: The study comprises of an extensive secondary research and also a primary research to understand the current scenario of Pharm.D. from studentsââ¬â¢ point of view. A literature survey was done to study the introduction and status of Pharm.D. curriculum in India and the achievement of Pharm.D. in western countries. Various journals and publications from the database engines of Ebsco, Emerald & Google Scholar were studied and referred to analyse the evolution and future of Pharm.D. Also, a primary research was conducted in Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal University, Karnataka. The selection of survey location (MCOPS) was done on the basis of a combined list from ââ¬ËIndiaââ¬â¢s Best Pharma Collegesââ¬â¢ (Careers 360 July 2011 Edition) and ââ¬ËInstitutes offering Pharm.D. and Pharm.D. (Post Baccalaureate) Coursesââ¬â¢ (Published by Pharmacy Council of India). A questionnaire was made on a 5 point Likert Scale and circulated online amongst the students of MCOPS. The responses were analysed by using the online softwares of Survey Monkey survey portal. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS: Out of 130 respondents to the survey, a total of 109(83.83%) respondents said that the curriculum of Pharm.D in India is justifiable for healthcare sector and 97 (74.61%) said that the internship of Pharm.D students meets the requirements of the hospitals/Clinical Research Organisation. 24 responses (18.46%) opposed the opinion of providing the prescribing rights to the Pharm.D. graduates and 69(37.69%) voiced that such a right, if provided, will not be accepted by the doctor community. Figure 1 is indicative of the above stated data. FIGURE 1 Closed ended questions were put to investigate the probable reason(s) for Pharm.D. lagging in India from the west. 115 responders (n=130) said that the Pharm.D. graduates will not be accepted by the Doctorsââ¬â¢ Community. 112 responders said that the exposure to clinical pharmacy was less and 117 were pessimistic about the awareness on pharmacy profession in India. The interpretation of the survey results shows that one of the probable reasons of selection of Pharm.D. course by students was the alluring tag of a ââ¬ËDoctorââ¬â¢. However, the critical analyses lead to a consensus of lack of required clinical exposure and knowledge of the field of diagnosis and therapeutics. If the Pharm.D. program can incorporate a few alterations in the curriculum and develop a practice-based academic unit bridging the pharmacy practice with academia, there is great hope for the Pharm.D. program in India. CONCLUSION: The findings of the survey revealed that the exposure of the Pharm.D. students to the clinical and diagnostic aspect of the therapeutic system needs to be increased. Efforts need to be put in to increase the awareness of Pharm.D., and also the Pharmacy profession in India on the whole. BIBLIOGRAPHY: 1. Subal C Basak, Dondeti Sathyanarayana. Transitions, Repetitions, Comparisons and Contrasts as Robidouxs Basic Strategies
Transitions, Repetitions, Comparisons and Contrasts as Robidouxs Basic Strategies The introduction Some basic issues While analyzing the article written by Michael A. Robidoux, it is necessary to highlight the basic strategies the author uses in his work. It must be pointed out that Robidoux relies on specific rhetorical strategies, in order to assure readers that his arguments are reliable. The author investigates the genesis of violence in such kinds of sports as hockey and lacrosse and clarifies the relevance of physical force as an expression of Canadian identity. The thesis statement The article is based on certain rhetorical strategies, which help the author make his arguments more persuasive: transitions, repetitions, comparison and contrast are considered to be the major strategies Robidoux relies on. The body The fundamentals of the article and their analysis While reading the article, it becomes obvious that the author is mostly interested in comparisons and contrasts between traditional and modern sport. Thus, comparisons and contrasts as some of the mo st important rhetorical strategies give the author an opportunity to analyze the similarities and dissimilarities between past and present and, thereby, to clarify certain complex ideas. Relying on the strategy, Robidoux supports evaluative judgments, i.e. he highlights the importance of hockey for the nation.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Transitions, Repetitions, Comparisons and Contrasts as Robidouxââ¬â¢s Basic Strategies specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In other words, the author reveals the history of sport development in Canada, in order to represent the idea of nationalism. In my opinion, the primary task the author wanted to achieve was not only to reflect the interdependence between sport and identity, but to reinforce the kind of interdependence, i.e. he wanted to show that ââ¬Å"to be a nation who plays hockey, means to understand what it means to be Canadian as being raced (namely white), classed ( namely middle-class), gendered (namely boys and men), and sexualized (namely straight) in very particular waysâ⬠(Allain 8). At first sight, it seems that Robidoux gives the readers an opportunity to trace back important historical events and make a corresponding conclusion. However, the author develops his arguments in a specific manner. When analyzing the article deeper, one can notice that the authorââ¬â¢s every conclusion boils down to a question of Canadian national identity as distinct from Britain and America. Thus, the author points out that ââ¬Å"the question becomes, then, how did a game such as hockey not only take shape in Canada, but become frequently cited as evidence that a Canadian culture existsâ⬠(Robidoux 209). When analyzing the sentence, it becomes obvious that the author uses transitions, in order to make a conclusion on the existence of Canadian identity. Robidoux tries to convince his readers in certain arguments by adding another points (furthe rmore), indicating cause and effect (then), emphasizing the importance of final results (in order to respond toâ⬠¦), etc. As far as the authorââ¬â¢s every conclusion is related to the issue of Canadian nationalism, one can conclude that Robidoux tries to intensify the importance of Canadian identity through repetitions. He speaks about Canadian uniqueness all over. For this reason, the authorââ¬â¢s arguments seem to be mostly subjective. That means that Robidouxââ¬â¢s arguments possess both strengths and weaknesses. One can suggest that my opinion is wrong, because the author recognizes certain contradictions in relation to the topic. For instance, Robidoux states: Since World War II, Canadians have been internationally perceived more as peacekeepers and, perhaps, even as being unreasonably polite ââ¬â both political constructions in themselves ââ¬â which makes it difficult to comprehend why a game such as hockey, known for its ferocity, speed and violence, woul d come to serve as Canadaââ¬â¢s primary national symbolâ⬠(Robidoux 209).Advertising Looking for essay on ethnicity studies? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More To qualify a point again, the author uses transition (perhaps); comparisons and contrasts (thus, hockey as a violent sport and polite Canadians are considered to be incompatible issues), repetitions (while pointing out Canadian national symbol). While speaking about the strengths of the article, one is to keep in mind that the authorââ¬â¢s analysis is based on strong evidence. He uses various kinds of sources and provides us with opinions of other researchers, specialists, critics, etc. The author pointed out that hockey and lacrosse played a great role in establishing Canada as a separated nation. He discovered the impact of sport on Canadaââ¬â¢s national mythology appearance. To my mind, the author wanted to represent the country as a peaceful nat ion, and it is obvious that he succeeded in the kind of representation. On the other hand, however, it seems that some important aspects were neglected. I suppose that his article lacks some important details. Although, Robidoux showed us the relationship between the kinds of sport and Canadian identity, he failed to explain some specific points concerning Canadaââ¬â¢s fear of American cultural imperialism. In my opinion, the author had to draw particular attention to Canadaââ¬â¢s geographical proximity to America; while he mostly considered the impact of certain historical events on Canadaââ¬â¢s identity formation. The conclusion Finally, it must be noted that the authorââ¬â¢s arguments were effectively developed due to the rhetorical strategies he relied on; however, as far as Robidoux failed in objective reasoning, one can conclude that his persuasive techniques should be somewhat upgraded. Comparisons and contrasts gave the author an opportunity to present cause and effect relations concerning sport and Canadian identity. Repetitions were used to intensify the meaning of certain judgments, including the issue of Canadian nationalism. Transitions were used to clarify complex, but important ideas. : Allain, Kristi. Top 5 Tips When Bidding For Freelance Work
Top 5 Tips When Bidding For Freelance Work Top 5 Tips When Bidding For Freelance Work Top 5 Tips When Bidding For Freelance Work By Colin One way of obtaining freelance work is by bidding for work through websites like GetAFreelancer.com, Guru.com or Elance.com. This route to contract work is a handy tool for stop-gap work but can be a minefield for the uninitiated. The idea is based on the eBay model, where clients post the type of work they are looking for within a budget range, timescale, and description of the work they need completed. Freelancers then bid on the job, and the client selects the best fit, or sometimes unsurprisingly, the cheapest offer of work. The system is based heavily on trust and therefore, like the problems experienced by a minority of eBay users, some people have had bad experiences using it. Bidding systems have downfalls as well as advantages, so this article aims at ensuring you get some important advice to ensure you donââ¬â¢t fall into one of the many pitfalls that exist to trap unsuspecting freelancers. Research the Client As with any job you might be considering, find out who you might be working for first. Do they have favourable comments against their ID? Do they have a substantial profile? Do they have a company website? If a posted job doesnââ¬â¢t feel right when you read it, the chances are you should steer clear. There are several giveaways you should watch out for when thinking of bidding for a writing gig: the poster seems confused about what it is they actually want they are a new poster offering a high budget they are a new poster with no references the poster has little or no information in their profile or job description the poster is reluctant to give up much information about himself or the job they are looking for work on a trial basis first All of these instances should set alarm bells ringing in your head, telling you the job you might be about to bid for is not all that it seems. Donââ¬â¢t Bid Low Not only is it an affront to hard working writers the world over, but bidding low for projects reduces your professionalism as well as your chances of moving forward in the industry. Too many jobs appear on these websites advertising work for a pittance but disguised as something fantastic. For example: ââ¬Å"$500 for easy article writingâ⬠sounds like a good deal, but when you read the small print, very often youââ¬â¢ll find the client is looking for 500 articles a week at $1 a piece. You would be a fool to go for it, because not only is it demeaning, it also propagates the misunderstanding that writers will work for next to nothing under ridiculous demands. The Writerââ¬â¢s Strike in America should have warned people about this sort of thing, but while there are writers who do it, the problem will always exist. Donââ¬â¢t be one of them. If you are serious about freelance writing, then do your research and stick to the going rate. Not only will people take you more seriously, but youââ¬â¢ll avoid getting involved with cowboys looking for a cheap deal. Remember: people will get what they pay for ââ¬â $1 per article will rightly get them garbage, compared to a quality article researched and written for $100. By all means bid strategically: if the average bid for a $100-$250 gig is sitting at $150 and this is within decent market rates for that type of work, then be competitive, but donââ¬â¢t lose your self-respect over it. Watch Out For Pirates Suppose a client accepts your bid and the ball is set rolling on a project. You await the full remit but when it arrives you discover it is for something a little bit more than previously agreed. It would be easy to return with a volley of abuse, and it might be even easier to take the work as it is and hope to impress. But donââ¬â¢t. A chancer is at work and he will take you for all you have. If you were to get involved in this type of situation, whatââ¬â¢s to say you will even get paid at the end of it? Should you find this happens, a short but polite email to the client explaining the new remit was not what you agreed, but you would be happy to discuss new terms as part of another project over and above the currently agreed one. Do not let yourself be bowled over by slick sales talk or threats of breach of contract ââ¬âstand your ground and be strong. If you lose the gig then you have lost nothing but a lot of hassle, so thank yourself for having the savvy to get out while you could. If the client is genuinely confused then negotiate a deal for the new work, and who knows, a continuing working relationship may develop to be very fruitful for both parties. Another popular scam is to sign up a writer, only for the client to say they would prefer you to write an amount of the project and submit it in advance, just to see if you are both compatible. Challenge them to put their money up first, stating you donââ¬â¢t work for free, or simply prepare to walk away. The chances are if you undertake this work you can wave goodbye to any form of payment and will never hear from them again. Be Prudent With Payments The main rule when handling payments is safety first. Escrow systems are normally in place to which it is recommended clients place the agreed amount of money first. This money is then held in this third party account until the job is completed and can be released; a system designed to protect both parties from intellectual and monetary theft. Using Escrow means you are also able to leave comments for each other after a projectââ¬â¢s completion in order to boost your profile within the community. A downside to this though, is you will normally be charged to withdraw your money to an external account, which if this is PayPal or WorldPay for example, may also take its own percentage depending on the amount. One way around this is to bypass Escrow and simply agree with the client to take payment straight into PayPal/WorldPay. This eliminates any extra charges, but loses the protection afforded from Escrow. In this instance, ask the client to deposit a percentage of the agreed fee into PayPal (unless you have worked with him before), to ensure confidence on either side that the work will be done, and that payment is safe. Donââ¬â¢t Entertain Anything Illegal From time to time seemingly well-paid gigs arise which may be illegal in some countries. Very often jobs are posted that ask the writer to plagiarise other articles or content, write unethical reports with ââ¬Å"guidelinesâ⬠that consist merely of lies, or offer payment to provide false names or testimonials in articles for people and products that do not exist. Many of these scams are used to gain money from people over the internet under false pretences, which in most countries is an illegal practice called fraud. It goes without saying that jobs like these should be avoided at all costs. Although you may be ghost writing the work, if the cops came looking there will always be a trail back to your computer. All this aside, there are some very good opportunities for work in the form of one-off gigs on bidding sites. They afford the writer a chance to dip their toes into new territory without too much being at stake, and it can be a good way of filling the gaps when things get quiet. Motivational Strategies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Motivational Strategies - Essay Example Microsoft tries to remove any barriers that create obstacles to learning, therefore it provides quick access to training resources and has designed programs that improve performance and provide guide and support to employees. Concerning engineers, Microsoft provides to them formal and informal classroom sessions, lab workshops with mentors, brief expert-and leader-driven talks, online community discussion, think-tank session, networking evens and online knowledge-management databases made available on the companyââ¬â¢s intranet. (T+D,2007). In its Tuition Assistance Program, Microsoft covers all tuition fees and textbooks for courses related to work. Its in-house training programs are quite extensive offering technical and nontechnical skills knowledge. Microsoftââ¬â¢s employees have traditionally low morale. Microsoft in order to overcome this issue has launched the program MyMicrosoft. The goals of this program are: improve work atmosphere, train management, increase investment in the staff share plan, a career plan framework for all employees and some other benefits like grocery delivery, on-site access to laundry, dry cleaning services and the return of a towel service at the companyââ¬â¢s gym. Typically, Microsoftââ¬â¢s basic incentive tool were stock options. Nowadays, the stock prices are very low so the stock options are not as an effective incentive tool as it used to be. Microsoft tried to satisfy unhappy employees by offering them the opportunity to sell their worthless options, though they did not get what they hoped to get. Microsoft chose a plan of direct grants of restricted stock to replace options. In this plan.Unlike options, actual shares are guaranteed to provide some value to employees, as long as the company doesnt go under. And at mature companies that pay dividends, employees can make money off their equity without having to sell off shares. That makes it
